Creative Compassion hosts Stars & Stripes 5K

May 23—Creative Compassion's Stars & Stripes 5K will be June 1 at the Cumberland County Community Complex and Obed River Park in Crossville.

The purpose of the 5K is to raise money to prevent local veterans from experiencing homelessness. Last year's funds went to house three homeless veterans.

Funds raised may also go toward home repairs and other housing assistance to help veterans feel safe and comfortable in their homes.

"We owe our veterans more than we can ever repay, but we can help them when they need a hand," said Mark Baldwin of Creative Compassion.

The 5K begins at 7 a.m. Each participant will receive a medal and a T-shirt. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each age division. The race is chip timed. Tickets are available on Eventbrite or participants can pay the morning of the 5K.

U.S. Navy veteran Tim French will be carrying an American flag in honor of a fallen veteran. French does similar walks around Crossville frequently and has been featured in several news stories.

Matt Goad, who has raised at least $1,000 in donations for each mile he walks, will be carrying a heavy load.

Goad posted on Facebook, "I am planning on carrying a 75-100 lb. ruck for this event. I'm looking for folks who would sponsor me in this event. If you would care enough to sponsor me in this event, please post in the comments how much you would contribute per pound of weight that I'll be carrying. 100% of money raised will be donated to help fund building projects for veterans in need. They've carried a lot of burdens for our nation. Let's give back and share some of their load."
