Coyote shot, killed after attacking women in 2 locations in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Police officers and people with Animal Services were in Burtonsville Thursday afternoon after they received a report of a coyote attack there.

The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCDP) posted about the incident in the 3600 block of Bell Rd. on the X platform at 4:11 p.m.

The police department followed up the post with a more formal release explaining that it was the second coyote attack in the county Thursday.

MCDP said it received a call around 9:45 a.m. after a coyote attacked a woman who was walking her dog in the 1400 block of Patuxent Dr. The location was near Watershed Park. Medics took the woman to the hospital. Her injuries weren’t life-threatening.

The incident in Burtonsville took place around 3:45 p.m. In that case, another woman was walking her dog when the coyote attacked. She fought off the coyote and stabbed the animal.

In an update at 7:10 p.m., MCDP said in a post on X that the coyote was located on a trail along Dustin Road and was shot and killed. MCDP said it would be tested for rabies.

In addition to asking people to be aware of what was going on around them, the police department reminded people not to approach a coyote if they spot one. Instead, police said to call Animal Services immediately. The telephone number is (240) 773-5925.
