Petra and Michael Mathers, an Astoria couple who were active in the arts, left $250,000 to the Liberty Theatre after their deaths in February.

The Astoria theater described the bequest as transformative and said it would play a crucial role in enhancing programming.

"Michael and Petra Mathers have been quiet but steadfast supporters of the Liberty, with a deep and enduring love for the arts," Jennifer Crockett, the theater's executive director, said in a statement announcing the gift. "Michael, in particular, had a unique connection to the theater. An avid photographer, he spent countless afternoons capturing the beauty of the theater, often exploring and documenting the rarely seen areas of the historic building.

"His adventurous spirit, honed from his time as a first mate on a schooner, made him comfortable navigating the theater's catwalks and hidden spaces."

Michael Mathers, 79, a photographer, and Petra Mathers, 78, a children's book author and illustrator, died by suicide. The couple sent letters to several people in the community in advance.

"This generous bequest will play a crucial role in enhancing the programming excellence of the Liberty Theatre, ensuring that it continues to be a vibrant cultural hub for future generations," Crockett said. "The theater extends its deepest gratitude to Michael and Petra Mathers for their remarkable contribution and their lasting impact on the arts community."
