Country singer releases ‘UNC’ break-up song for March Madness

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A country singer-songwriter has captured his personal sense of heartbreak that comes with being a fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

“What if there was a March Madness song about a girl that went to UNC and broke your heart?“ Gary Frost posted on TikTok, getting the word out the song called “UNC” that’s streaming now.

Considering Carolina’s run in the NCAA tournament, which included an upset loss to Alabama in the Sweet Sixteen, the premise of the catchy ditty sounds like a slam dunk.

“It’s about that kind of feeling when you’re in a relationship,” said Frost, who lives in Nashville. “And somebody’s about to leave and there’s nothing you can do to stop them.”

Alabama holds off North Carolina 89-87 to reach Elite Eight for 2nd time ever

We used to dream about that Chapel on the Hill. In Northern Carolina where it felt like time stood still,” he sings, giving us a sample of how the tune starts.

The song Frost co-wrote with J.W. Griffin is about his New Jersey high school sweetheart, who went on to Carolina. Back then, she was his number one seed, you might say.

“Yeah, ha-ha! You got it, exactly there you go!” Frost told Queen City News.

The lyrics weave a love story and his basketball fandom together.

Frost says he’s gotten mostly positive feedback about “UNC.” The exception is Duke fans, who don’t care for the Carolina theme.

“I passed it out, should have took the layup. I don’t think we can make it up this time,” the song continues.

In 2016, plans to move to Chapel Hill didn’t work out and they went their separate ways.

“Being a Tar Heel fan, I had to choose, am I just going to forget about this team altogether because it reminds me of her or am I going to continue to support them and just brush her under the rug, which is what I did,” said Frost.

Gary’s still in love with Carolina blue.

“Used to be you and me, now it’s U-N-C,” the catchy hook of the song explains.

For a while, watching UNC wasn’t always easy. But that heartache was a distant memory when he and fiancé Christina became engaged last October.

“Yeah, it’s kind of like a full circle moment for me, just trying to, you know. Just starting from one point where you think your life is going out the window, to this other point where everything kind of worked out like it was supposed to,“ Frost says.

Coming full circle took longer than a three-minute, 14-second song.

But Frost believes the story behind “UNC” is universal.
