Update: Phenix City police make quick arrest in overnight restaurant and bar capital murder case

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WRBL) — A Phenix City man is in custody following an overnight shooting at a restaurant and bar that left a Smiths Station man dead, according to police.

Jeffrey Aaron Spurlock, 42 and known to police as “Fruit Loop,” was arrested shortly after the shooting of Jacob Sanes, 34, outside of Aces Grill & Bar on U.S. Highway 80.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry, pronounced Sanes at 3:15 Saturday morning. Sanes’ body will be taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery for an autopsy.

Phenix City Police say the shooing happened about 1:30 a.m. While police were investigating the shooting, the patrol division noticed Spurlock’s vehicle traveling west on U.S. 80. A traffic stop was initiated and Spurlock was taken into custody.

He is facing capital murder charges. Phenix City Police Capt. Skip Lassiter told WRBL that Spurlock had been in previous legal trouble and was known to police.
