Corning man convicted for rape, other felonies after reportedly assaulting teenage girl

A Corning man accused of forcibly raping a teenage girl in May 2023 has been found guilty of multiple felonies following trial in Steuben County Court.

The jury convicted Demetrius Goree, 39, on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, and predatory sexual assault.

The charges stem from an incident reported to Corning police May 24, 2023 regarding an assault that took place the previous evening.

Goree approached the 17-year-old victim and started a conversation, ultimately giving her a false name, police said.

The incident continued into the nighttime hours at Goree's residence, where police say he provided the victim with alcohol and marijuana before sexually assaulting her.

At the time, Goree was registered as a level 3 sex offender, the most serious level, after serving time in state prison for a conviction on the attempted rape of a 14-year-old girl in Tompkins County.

Goree remains in custody at the Steuben County Jail to await sentencing, which was scheduled for Aug. 5.

He faces up to life in prison on the predatory sexual assault conviction alone, up to 25 years in prison for the rape conviction, and seven years for the sexual abuse charge.
