With less than two weeks until their Opening Day matchup against the Chicago Cubs on March 28, the Texas Rangers have a litany of injured players.

Three members of the infield are currently injured —Corey Seager, Josh Jung and Nathaniel Lowe — plus pitchers Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle.

Rangers general manager Chris Young recently provided updates on the ailing Rangers.

“Corey’s doing great, progressing nicely, he’s been swinging in the cages and trending towards live [batting practice] sometime this coming week and we’ll evaluate and see where he is in terms of game status shortly thereafter,” said Young,” Josh, the expectation is you’ll see in games very soon here. Passing all the tests and feeling really good.”

The news was good for Josh Jung who strained his left calf and Corey Seager who is recovering from a sports hernia. Both have chances to play on Opening Day; if they do not, they should be available soon after.

The news wasn’t as good for first baseman Nathaniel Lowe who will be out until at least mid-April because of a strained oblique.

Among the pitchers Scherzer, who suffered from a herniated disk that required surgery in December, appears to be the closest to returning from injury.

“Max is back in camp, he’s feeling great. He’s starting his normal buildup for the season, so I think we’re looking at some time end of May, beginning of June for him if things go according to plan,” said Young.

Mahle and deGrom are still expected to return after the all-star break though both are progressing well according to Young.

The Rangers will be short-staffed to start their title defense but are still among the favorites to win the World Series.

The Rangers are in their final week of training in Surprise, Ariz. They then return to Arlington play a pair of exhibition games against the Boston Red Sox, March 25-26, before the opener against the Cubs.
