Corbin Tourism Commission hears from Knox Promise Neighborhood

May 20—CORBIN — The Corbin Tourism Commission heard from the Knox Promise Neighborhood program about a potential partnership between the two organizations last Tuesday at their regular monthly meeting.

Speaking for Knox Promise Neighborhood were Donna Logan and Sandy Fredrick, both of whom expressed their desire to partner with the tourism commission to help provide fun, educational experiences for children in the area.

Knox Promise Neighborhood is an organization that utilizes federal and state grand funding to support Knox County, Barbourville, and Corbin school districts.

Of a potential partnership, Logan said, "We would love to partner with the tourism commission in some way to help the kids of Corbin...We are somewhat limited by rules and regulations because of the grant money, but we were thinking that we could partner in someway to help promote the Cumberland Valley Cruise-In; we think it would be a great opportunity to teach about science and mechanics."

Fredrick also added that they would actively be looking for opportunities to partner with the Tourism Commission.

No formal action was taken at the meeting, but the commission appeared to be receptive to the idea.

In other news, the Corbin Tourism Commission voted to approve spending of up to $550 for advertising on local radio stations to promote Corbin's annual July 4 fireworks show.

The advertisements will be ran across the month of June and will be on the We Rock 102.7 and EZ Country Giant radio stations.

The commission also voted to approve funding for a full-page ad in Kentucky Waterways & Adventure Trails magazine. The ad will appear in the Summer 2024 edition as well as the Spring 2025 edition, bringing the total cost to $3,394.

Lastly, the commission agreed to review their personnel policy and update its language. The review is being spearheaded by tourism board member Dr. Summer Jackson, but it will be reviewed by the entire board and board attorney once the initial sweep is done.

According to Jackson, the policy has not been updated since 2016.
