May 23—CORBIN — The Corbin City Council voted at Monday's regular meeting to hire Parks and Recreation Director Jacob Roan to coordinate events in downtown Corbin.

With the departure of former Downtown Manager and Tourism Director Maggy Monhollen, there was a certain void to be filled in regard to planning and coordinating events in downtown Corbin.

Now for another $10,000 added to his yearly salary, Roan will be in a dual role as both the Parks and Recreation Director as well as Downtown Coordinator.

Both Roan and City Manager Scott Williamson highlighted the fact that civic engagement is an essential part of the continued growth and success of the city.

In particular, they both thanked the downtown committee, which is comprised of downtown business owners, for their work in promoting Corbin.

Additionally Williamson, in his City Manager's report, stressed the importance of "taking care of your property" if you reside in the city.

"We have some absentee owners who have let their properties go...," he said. "We would much rather you do the work yourself because the legal way is much more costly to all of us."

Roan also noted to commissioners in his departmental report that the Corbin City Pool will open again this Saturday, May 25, and that Pepsi Co. of Corbin has donated 10 Pepsi themed umbrellas for use at the pool.
