Cops break up party with underage drinking Saturday night in San Anselmo

(BCN) — Officers broke up a party over the weekend in San Anselmo where juveniles were drinking alcohol, Central Marin Police said.

At about 10:40 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the report of a juvenile party at a residence in San Anselmo. Officers allegedly found minors gathering on private property with alcohol.

A citation for violation of San Anselmo’s social host ordinance was issued, police said.

Marin’s social host ordinance dictates that adults are responsible for any party in their household where underage people are drinking, regardless if they are present or not.

While Marin is consistently ranked as the healthiest county in California, it’s also known for having high rates of underage drinking and drug use.

Law enforcement officials can issue citations for civil fines and fees for such underage gatherings, the county said.

“However, restorative justice is a key component that allows for learning on part of both youths and adults as opposed to parents simply paying a fine,” said the county in 2020 during a campaign to reduce underage drinking. “It can further promote youth leadership, get young people involved in creating positive change and will make them more aware of the consequences.”
