The $3.3 million Conejo Canyons Bridge in Thousand Oaks was recently completed and is now providing hikers with better access to thousands of acres of open space.

The 140-foot-long span goes across the Arroyo Conejo Creek in the Conejo Canyons Open Space area, improving access to popular Wildwood Regional Park. It also provides a defined route between the Santa Rosa Equestrian Park and Wildwood Canyon, city officials said in a news release.

Work started in September on the steel bridge southwest of Hill Canyon Road. The project connects trails and access roads on both sides of the creek.

City officials say the bridge offers a safer, shorter and flatter hike to Paradise Falls, Elliott Peak and other destinations. It also provides access for emergency vehicles between the Hill Canyon Treatment Plant, which treats the city's wastewater, and the Municipal Services Center on Rancho Conejo Boulevard.

A celebration marking the completion took place May 14 and involved the city, the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency and the Conejo Recreation and Park District. The three entities collaborated on funding.

The bridge opened to the public in April.
