CHS radio station hosting annual Radiothon

Chesterton High School’s WDSO 88.3 FM, a student-run, not-for-profit radio station, is holding their 33rd annual Radiothon through Friday. Students will be live on the air from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. DJs will take song requests, song dedications, and will be giving away prizes from local businesses and WDSO shirts all week long. The Radiothon is led by Senior DJs including program directors, Josey Parlock and Max Good, as well as Olivia Callaway, Rachel Gallup, Jacob Spence, Deegan Parker, Aaron Underwood, Ira Kashyap, Don Tharp, Thaddeus Westerlund, Hailey Jalovecky, Robert Mueller, Shea Ogle, Ethan Markwart, Elsa Estridge, Ryan Holder, Luke Robertson, Zach Marchese and Braden Kennelly. Local punk band, VoidClass, is scheduled to make an appearance to play some of their music and be interviewed live on-air on Wednesday afternoon.

During the event, listeners can make a pledge by calling the station at 219-983-3777 or by contacting the station through Facebook Messenger. Pledges can be mailed in with cash, checks made out to WDSO, or donate via credit/debit card at https://duneland.revtrak.net/wdso-radiothon. WDSO also will be releasing a limited edition throwback logo shirt for a donation of $25. The logo was designed in the 1980s by Chesterton resident Deano Recktenwall. Donations received from the public help support the station’s general upkeep and upgrades, as well as funding the cost of the station’s goal to expand its broadcast range and much-needed sportscasting equipment upgrades.

PNW offers summer camp programs for K-12 students

Parents looking for entertaining and engaging programs for their children for summer 2024 can check out more than 20 programs serving a variety of interests for K-12 students. PNW summer camps allow participants to have fun while gaining memorable hands-on experiences. Various camps’ themes and activities will include robotics, artificial intelligence, forensics, nursing, leadership, environmental sciences, psychology and sports. Students can explore their areas of interest, deepen their knowledge, meet peers with similar interests, engage with knowledgeable PNW faculty members, and build their skills for future education and work careers. Dunes Arts Summer Youth Theatre Program now enrolling

Dunes Arts Summer Theatre is now registering two sessions of youth theatre education programs to be held at the historic summer theatre campus, 288 Shady Oak Drive, Michiana Shores. A Musical Theatre camp for ages 8 to 18 will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays July 9 to 25. The fee is $225 or $200 for two or more students. A Theatre Mentorship camp for ages 13 to 18 will be held on Monday and Friday afternoons July 8 to 26. Designed for those with higher ambitions to prepare for college and beyond, students will work one-on-one with dunesARTS Artistic Director, Steve Scott. Meeting times will be mutually determined. The fee is $50 per one-hour session or six classes for $250. There will be a final presentation for parents, family and friends at Dunes at 11 a.m. July 27. Hospitals to host Stroke Awareness Month events

Community Healthcare System will offer a wide variety of programs for Stroke Awareness Month in May. The sessions range from managing stroke risk factors to healthy cooking demonstrations and preventative screenings. A Stroke Symposium will be held from 8 a.m. to Noon Friday at St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart. Topics at the event include: “Stroke is an Emergency”; “Stroke: Always B.E.F.A.S.T.”; “Innovations in Stroke Prevention”; and “Get Your Plate in Shape Cooking Demonstration.” A free Stroke and Diabetes Awareness Fair will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster. Topics at the event include: “Stroke is an Emergency – Call 911”; “Stroke Alert – Immediate Care Awaits”; “Surgical Management of Stroke”; “Food for Thought”; and “Managing Stroke Risk Factors.” Both events offer hemoglobin A1C screenings and cholesterol testing. Master Gardeners offer May program

Join the Lake County Master Gardeners as they present a free program on “Garden Harmony – Nurturing Ecosystems to Enhance Insect Diversity” at 6 p.m. May 7 at Purdue Cooperative Extension – Lake County, 2293 N. Main St., Crown Point. Desi Robertson-Thompson, research coordinator for the Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, will discuss how insect variety is crucial for a balanced garden ecosystem, leading to natural pest control, healthy plants, pollination power, reduced workload and environmental benefits.
