“He was just a good, easy friendly face to be around,” reminisced Blair Pollister, a family friend who echoed the sentiments of many who knew Officer Hare.

Nathaniel Sandoval, Hare’s former fire chief, added, “He’s just a man of honor,” while Jessica Goen, another family friend, affirmed, “You couldn’t ask for a better officer.”

Officer Justin Hare served with the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) for the last six years, but his commitment to service extended far beyond his role in law enforcement. Prior to joining the State Police, Hare worked at the Raton Airport and later became a volunteer firefighter, following in the footsteps of his grandfather. He was among the founding members of the Colfax County Rapid Response Volunteer Department, illustrating his deep-rooted commitment to community safety.

In 2018, Officer Hare transitioned to law enforcement, graduating from the Law Enforcement Academy in the State Police’s 93rd graduating class. He resided in Tucumcari with his girlfriend and their two daughters, where he was not only a dedicated officer but also an involved father.

As a T-ball coach and assisting with soccer, Hare embodied the spirit of mentorship and encouragement. “He was a go-getter,” recalled Pollister. “He would run around with the kids, he would just be there with a smile on his face, saying ‘Come on,’ and like, you know, ‘go get him.’ He wasn’t afraid to encourage them.”

Officer Hare’s impact extended beyond his family and the police force. He forged strong bonds with local businesses, including Jack’s Truck Repair, where he was known for his friendly demeanor and willingness to help others.

“He was just always hanging out, coming in and borrowing tools, you know, asking for advice,” said Jessica Goen, reflecting on Officer Hare’s presence at the repair shop. “So it really hit home. It almost feels like, you know, one of ours is gone.”

Tragically, Officer Hare’s life was cut short while he was fulfilling his duty to serve and protect. “He was the type of person who would probably pull over and see if he could lend a hand,” noted Nathaniel Sandoval, highlighting Officer Hare’s innate desire to assist those in need.

The New Mexico State Police will honor fallen Officer Justin Hare with a vigil on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:30 PM at the State Police Tucumcari office.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Legacy Church, 7201 Central Avenue NW Albuquerque, NM 87121.
