Community gathers to remember life of fallen Campbell County Deputy

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR)—Community members gathered at the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office to remember the life of a fallen deputy.

Deputy Jason Saunders was killed in 2007 during a pursuit of a drunk driver which ended in a fatal car crash. Saunders was only 24 years old and he was the first deputy to lose his life in the line of service in Campbell County.

Deputies and family members gathered at the sheriff’s office’s Memorial Garden and laid a wreath in his honor.

Former Campbell County Sheriff Terry Gaddy says Saunders’ mother had him promise that her son would never be forgotten.

“He had a giver’s heart and he will always be remembered that he was in the volunteer fire department, volunteer rescue squad, started with us,” said Gaddy at the event. “A wonderful young man.”
