PETOSKEY — The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation recently awarded grants to two projects intended to help protect Little Traverse Bay and its watershed.

The grant funding totaled $14,750 and came from the Little Traverse Bay Protection and Restoration Fund. The grants were awarded to the City of Petoskey and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council.

The city’s project includes revitalizing landscaping around the Resource Center in Bayfront Park. According to a press release from the community foundation, “The once vibrant greenery surrounding the Resource Center has succumbed to invasive species and storm damage since its original planting 30 years ago. With this grant funding, the City of Petoskey will focus on planting native plant species, enhancing drainage and preventing the proliferation of invasive species.”

The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council will use the funding for a workshop targeted at lakeshore property owners and real estate professionals.

The workshop will discuss topics such as state and local lakeshore property ordinances, the impacts of various land use practices on water quality and strategies to safeguard water quality while preserving property values.
