Commissioners recognize April as Child Abuse Prevention Month

In 2023, 797 child abuse and neglect investigations were completed in Wayne County.

“We must work together as a community to increase awareness about child abuse and promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment,” Commissioner Jon Hofstetter read from a proclamation. “Prevention remains the best defense for our children and families.”

Child abuse is a serious issue that affects millions of children around the world. The trauma of abuse can have long-lasting impacts on a child’s physical and mental health, as well as their social and emotional development. Despite efforts to prevent child abuse, it remains a prevalent issue.

Recognize the signs of child abuse

Recognizing the signs of child abuse and neglect is crucial. All individuals, parents, educators, healthcare professionals, and members of the community need to be able to identify potential indicators of abuse or neglect, such as frequent and unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, and depression.

Child abuse and neglect are complex issues that can stem from a variety of factors. Understanding these underlying contributors is crucial to effectively prevent and combat these forms of harm.

Raising awareness also plays a key role in prevention. Educating communities, parents, caregivers, and children themselves about the warning signs of abuse and the resources available for support ultimately sends a powerful message that abuse will not be tolerated and that every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
