Commission strips ex-KCKPD cop of police license after pleas to assault, criminal threat

A former Kansas City, Kansas, cop has been stripped of his police license after he was convicted of felony crimes related to domestic abuse.

Deotis Brown, 35, lost his Kansas law enforcement certification earlier this month based on a ruling by the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training.

He did not participate in an interview with a state investigator, according to state records, and the revocation order was issued based on criminal allegations raised in Jackson and Wyandotte counties.

The allegations came to light when a longtime romantic partner reported to Kansas City, Missouri, police that Brown assaulted her at a wedding reception.

She had fresh bruises when she walked into KCPD’s East Patrol station the next morning, according to court records. She told detectives she was choked and struck after an argument.

She also accused Brown of pointing a firearm at her on an earlier occasion and harassing her for contacting police. That information led Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree to bring additional felony charges.

Jackson County prosecutors charged Brown with three felonies. He pleaded guilty in September to one count of second-degree domestic assault.

Conditions of his plea agreement included no contact with the victim in the case and that he no longer be employed as a police officer. Jackson County District Court Judge Bryan E. Round ordered Brown to a term of probation with a suspended sentence of four years.

In the Wyandotte County case, Brown entered a no-contest plea to a single felony count of making a criminal threat. He was sentenced in February to two years of probation.

A criminal defense attorney who represented Brown in the Wyandotte County case declined to comment on the certification decision.

KCKPD hired Brown in 2017. He was placed on unpaid leave after the criminal allegations surfaced. His employment with the department ended Sept. 25.
