Columbus creative looking to empower and support women through art gallery

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL)— March is Women’s History Month, with international Women’s Day landing on March 8th. One Columbus artists is looking to empower and support women through her art.

Alex Winchester, a local artist and owner of the brand ‘Pale Possum Studio,’ whose items can be found nestled on the shelves of The Peach Shoppe & Co. right off Front Avenue.

Born on then Fort Benning, Winchester grew up in the Chattahoochee area before moving to St. Louis for school. She says art has always been her passion.

“I’ve always drawn. Painted since I was little. My grandmother used to have a little sketchbook that she would show me, and we would draw together,” Winchester said. “So, I’ve always just naturally enjoyed art.”

Art is not only a passion for Winchester; but also form of therapy she’s looking to share with other women this month.

“100 Days of Pink is a project that I started because in school I was making a lot of work about memory and trauma and sexual abuse and my experience with that,” Winchester said. “And after a while, it became overwhelming… and like the point of it was that it was empowering and helped me work through those feelings and I needed a break from that.”

Now Winchester alongside The Peach Shoppe & Co. will be hosting an art gallery selling each of her 100 Days of Pink pieces for $25, with 20% of the proceeds going to RAINN—the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network. Their goal for the event: to empower and celebrate women.

“It was really therapeutic for me because like I said, my work before was empowering, but it became overwhelming. So, it was like I needed a new source of like therapy, art therapy. I’ve always like lived by this idea of having strength through vulnerability,” Winchester shared. “So, it’s important to be vulnerable in moments, and that’s when you find your strength. And I really focus on that and all my work and everything that I really think about and how I live life, honestly.”

Over the span of a year, Winchester spent 100 days creating pink art to allow herself the space to create with no external influencers.

The Art Gallery will be held just above the Peach Shoppe & Co. on International Women’s Day, March 8th from 6 until 10 p.m., the event is 21+ and has a $5 entry fee. In addition to the 100 Days of Pink pieces, there will also be a variety of local vendors in attendance.
