Columbia County holds Spring Job Fair, several departments needing positions filled

GROVETOWN, Ga. (WJBF) – Extending employment opportunities to locals continues to be a priority for Columbia County.

Tuesday night the county held its Spring Job Fair at the Columbia County Exhibition Center in Grovetown.

Dr. Carney is the Human Resources Director for the county.

“We have 13 different departments represented here tonight, hopefully looking for the next generation of workers,” said Carney.

Some of those departments included Animal Services, Fire Rescue and Roads and Bridges.

Carney says the maintenance departments are the areas that need help the most–Christy Williams is the training and safety manager for the water and utility department.

“We actually have tons of openings right now,” said Williams. “We have at least 4-5 entry level position openings, those are going to be labeled as maintenance workers or trainees. With those positions, you’d either be working on all the drinking water pipes throughout our county or all the sewer pipes throughout our county. We even have an opening in our mechanical department–so you would be working on pumps and motors at the five waste water plants we have, or the two drinking water plants.”

Another department needing to fill positions is the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Sergeant Daniel Massey says they have a constant need for deputy jailers and 9-1-1 communication officers.

“We’re here today because we are trying to fill those positions,” said Massey. “We’ve been in need for quite a while now. Every time it seems like we get somebody, we lose somebody. So we’re always, constantly recruiting.”

With several spots open, Carney says it’s a great opportunity for locals looking for a job to stay in the area.

“We get pretty serious job lookers, and we sell them on benefits. We have competitive salaries, but the county has really good benefits. So we just try to help them find the fit for them. They may be young, right out of high school or college, or could be retirees–we want them all. Especially the ones that live in this area, we want to keep them in this area,” said Carney.

If you missed Tuesday’s job fair, Carney says the county continues to recruit throughout the year.
