Colorado helps students find summer jobs

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — As school wraps up, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) is starting its oldest youth employment program. The Governor’s Summer Job Hunt (GSJH) is beginning its 44th year. Since 1981, this program has helped thousands of high school and college students in Colorado find summer jobs. These jobs give them a chance to learn, use their skills and see how businesses work.

Joe Barela, the head of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, says, “We’re excited for another successful season of the Governor’s Summer Job Hunt. This program is important for building a strong workforce in Colorado. We’re ready to help another group of young job seekers this summer.”

This year, Colorado workforce centers have organized over 130 workshops and events to help youth get ready for jobs. More than 12,000 young people and 700 employers have attended these events.

Steve Wright, who runs the Governor’s Summer Job Hunt program, says it’s about more than just finding a job. It teaches young people skills they need for work, like having a good work ethic and building towards their future careers. They’ve held over 60 workshops on resume writing, interviewing and job searching. Workforce centers have also organized over 70 events to help students explore careers.
