Robbery suspect hospitalized after shooting himself in standoff with Colleyville police

An aggravated robbery suspect who was in a standoff with Colleyville police on Friday has been hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

On Friday morning, the Dallas Police Fugitive Unit was surveilling a possible aggravated robbery suspect as part of an ongoing investigation when the suspect led Dallas police into the city of Bedford, Colleyville police said in a Facebook post.

Just before 10:30 a.m., Dallas authorities contacted Bedford police for assistance to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle. Bedford officers located the suspect driving and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, according to the post.

Shortly after, Colleyville police were dispatched to the 3700 block of Brentwood Drive to assist in apprehending the suspect. Colleyville police were told the driver had not yielded when Bedford police had initiated a traffic stop. The driver continued to flee from officers into Brentwood Court before getting out of the vehicle. The suspect had a pistol in his hand, but he was not pointing it or discharging it at anyone, police say.

Colleyville and Bedford officers kept the subject contained while a Code Red alert was sent around 11 a.m. to nearby residents, urging them to stay inside their homes and lock their doors, according to the post.

Multiple SWAT Teams with negotiators responded to the location, in addition to outside agency drone operators, a K-9 officer, air support and other resources.

After almost 3 hours of negotiations, the North Tarrant Regional SWAT Team used a non-lethal distraction method in an attempt to resolve the situation, police said.

During the deployment of the distraction devices, the suspect grabbed his handgun from the hood of his vehicle, turned it on himself, and discharged the weapon, according to police.

Colleyville Fire Department paramedics, who were staged nearby, immediately responded to the scene and rendered aid, police said. Paramedics then transported the subject to a local hospital where he is in critical condition.

Police did not release the name of the suspect.
