Collect rain, help the environment, and save money!

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — Laws preventing the collection of rain date all the way back to the early 1800s. That all changed in 2016 when a new Colorado law passed allowing up to 110 gallons of water collection on a property.

The Fountain Creek Watershed District has been working to protect and enhance the health of the watershed around the Pikes Peak region for almost a decade now. The member government organization watches over the water from Palmer Lake to Pueblo. The watershed encompasses El Paso and Pueblo counties.

The District is using rain barrels to help sustain the local watershed. They note that there are a lot of great benefits that come with collecting rain from these barrels.

Alli Schuch, with the Fountain Creek Watershed District, says, “Rain barrels are a great environmental sustainability solution; they extend our limited water resources. And it’s also a better way to water your plants. The plants do better with natural rainwater than the chemically treated water that comes out of our taps”.

The watershed is selling these 50-gallon rain barrels on its website at a discounted price through April 1 – click here to find out more about the barrels and their many benefits.

The idea is to connect each barrel to one of your gutters and have the stormwater drain into them. That water is then used to help water non-edible vegetation around your property, which will eventually feed back into the system and carry on downstream. The rain barrels are also able to connect to each other maximizing storage.
