Coast Guard rescues two people, dog near Tongue Point

Two people and a dog were rescued on Saturday after their boat capsized 2 1/2 miles east of Tongue Point.

One person was successfully hoisted by the U.S. Coast Guard's Air Station Astoria, while the other individual and the dog were rescued by personnel from Station Cape Disappointment.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Annika Hirschler said the call for help initially came through 911 dispatchers, who reached out to the Coast Guard for help.

“We do have reports from 911 that they heard, ‘Help, I’m drowning,’ from someone in the background of the call,” she said. “And then 911 was able to use GPS to basically locate where they were.”

Upon being rescued, the two people were transferred to the care of emergency medical services.
