Coast Guard assists with oil spill in the Elizabeth River

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Coast Guard is assisting with an oil spill in the Elizabeth River Friday morning.

An estimated 10 gallons of oil was spilled in the Elizabeth River near downtown Norfolk.

According to officials, the oil spill occurred around 8:50 a.m. during a fueling operation. The NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson had fuel spill during refueling operations when the fuel barge’s hose detached from the barge, NOAA said.

The ship was boomed by NOAA personnel prior to fueling. The contractor and ship’s crew quickly deployed measures to absorb and mitigate the spread of spilled fuel, NOAA said. Nobody has been injured.

Drone 10 got video that shows the spillage.
