City of Sunland Park heavily invests in state of the art facilities

SUNLAND PARK, New Mexico (KTSM) – The City of Sunland Park is heavily investing in new state of the art facilities to account for its expanding growth, and in hopes of improving the quality of life for their community, according to city officials.

The City is nearly finished building a multigenerational center facility in the same vicinity as its expanding new sports complex.

“(The Multigenerational Center) is going to be the home for many new activities for the community and a space where people can come out and enjoy, and this is people from all ages. So we’re making investments in the community to improve the quality of life and to really make Sunland Park a place where people want to live,” said Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea.

The facility will feature a main hall to host events with a maximum capacity of 150 people; a commercial kitchen that they hope will be an incubator for people looking to start their own business, or for culinary students from nearby high schools to further develop their craft; a computer lab and office spaces for people in need of finding a temporary workspace.

The aesthetic of the facility will consist of large open windows where people will be able to enjoy views of the Franklin Mountains, the Rio Grande Trail running parallel to the facility, and six soccer fields being built at the complex.

The color scheme of the facility will feature brown and beige colors resembling those of the original Sunland Park City seal.

The city is also in the initial stages of creating a new government center where they will house many of their services.

“We have negotiated with the land developer several years ago, ten acres for the development of a new municipal complex that would bring in the police department, the fire department, the administrative offices and other opportunities for us to expand. So we are going to be further developing that area to further tie into this space and create a synergistic area where people can get a lot of the social services in one space,” said Perea.

As part of their continued growth, the City of Sunland Park has been adding new positions across its departments and investing in training, equipment, and resources over the past year and a half, which have resulted in the city government outgrowing its current facility.

The new municipal complex will be called the One Stop Shop and will be centrally located in the city to provide better access to residents and business, featuring state of the art equipment and technology, according to city officials.

Early estimated costs are $35 million dollars, and the facility is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027.
