City projects continue to take shape

PETOSKEY — The city’s busy construction season continues to make progress, with multiple projects underway across Petoskey.

City manager Shane Horn updated the Petoskey City Council on the various projects during their meeting on Monday.

“As you know we are very busy on getting projects going to make sure that we’re not in the way when all of our visitors arrive,” Horn said.

Work at Sunset Park should be wrapping up by the end of the month, Horn said. The renovations include improved fencing, enhanced landscaping, a new concrete path and accessible tables and benches at the roadside park.

“Sunset Park is going very well,” Horn said.

Multiple road projects are also on schedule.

“Mike (Robbins) and his public works crew are busy on Bay View Avenue,” Horn said. “The new water main has been completed. Currently pouring curb and gutter. Sidewalk work will happen later this week. Fine grading and paving starting next week … with restoration to follow. We’re anticipating this to be wrapped up by mid June.”

Resurfacing work has also started on Winter Park Lane, Rose Street and Balsam Avenue.

“Those streets have been milled and that work will continue over the course of the next few weeks,” Horn said. “I know the completion is by mid June for those resurfacing projects as well.”

Preliminary work is also set to begin this week for a resurfacing project on East Mitchell Street. Horn said the concrete crosswalks need to be taken out in advance of the mill work.

“We’ll be putting some temporary patches in the following week,” he said. “The paving will start the week of the 10th of June. That is anticipated to be complete before our busy July 4th weekend.”

Traffic detours will be needed as part of this project.

“Emmet County is also taking off from our (city) limits and going to Division Road in Bear Creek Township,” Horn said. “So Emmet County will be taking that up during the same project. That will be a nice project … very good coordination amongst jurisdictions, so we certainly appreciate that.”
