City of Pottsville announces Memorial Day services

The annual Memorial Day service in Pottsville, set for 11 a.m. Monday at the Garfield Square Soldiers Monument, will honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces.

All members of the community, veterans, active-duty service members and their families are invited to join and pay tribute to those who gave their lives to defend the nation’s freedom and values.

According to a release from city officials, the Memorial Day service will include:

• Wreath-laying ceremony and 21-gun salute: Gestures to honor fallen soldiers in remembrance of their sacrifice.

• Guest speakers: Pottsville native Chief Warrant Officer Zachary Reichert will be the distinguished speaker. Other guests will include city Mayor Dave Clews and city council members, local veterans representatives and Winter Carnival royalty.

• Reading of the “Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields”: Students from Nativity BVM and Pottsville Area high schools will recite.

• Dedication of Hometown Hero Banners: A moment of silence for all hometown heroes and new banner names will be observed to reflect on the lives lost and the enduring legacy of those who served.

• Musical tributes: The world famous Third Brigade Band will perform several patriotic selections as well as taps to uplift and inspire attendees. Winter Carnival Snowflake Princess Ella Frantz will also perform “God Bless America.”

• Invocation by the Rev. Phillip Rodgers, of St. Patrick Roman Church, and Benediction by pastor John Wallace, of First United Methodist Church.

“We are deeply indebted to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,” Clews said in the release. “Our Memorial Day service is a solemn reminder of their selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to protecting the freedoms we cherish. We invite the community to join us as we come together to honor and remember our fallen heroes.”
