City officials, lawmakers call for funding to be restored for libraries
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Supporters of the New York Public Library system will rally outside City Hall on Tuesday to call for funding to be restored for libraries.
Mayor Eric Adams’ $112 billion budget for next year has deep cuts, including cutting nearly $60 million in library spending. The cuts could push more branches to only offer five days a week of service and stonewall spending on materials and programs, library leaders said.

Brooklyn Public Library President Linda Johnson said the city’s libraries need all the funding Adams is proposing to cut.
Adams told PIX11 News last month that his door is open to compromise as the budget isn’t due until the end of June.

Library officials are also being asked to cut from their $130 million capital plans for maintenance and renovations for the first time since 2008.
Public libraries in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn were forced to close on Sundays after Adams announced the full list of proposed cuts to city funding in November 2023.
