City of Elmira to provide residents new garbage, recycling bins

Updated on April 16 to include the expected timeline.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The City of Elmira will be rolling out new garbage and recycling bins for its residents.

According to City Manager Mike Collins, the City of Elmira is in the process of purchasing new bins for recycling and garbage and has already received the first batch of bins. These new bright yellow bins will be compatible with garbage trucks with automated side loaders.

Elmira Compost Facility to reopen soon

Elmira does not currently have an automated garbage truck, but the city plans to buy one in the future. Automated trucks don’t require workers to exit the truck or hang off of the side. According to the CDC, automated side loaders are safer than traditional garbage trucks because they reduce the risk of workers being hit by other vehicles or their own trucks. These trucks also prevent injuries caused by manual heavy lifting.

The City of Elmira has not started distributing the new bins to residents yet and still needs to determine which district will receive them first. According to Collins, the city plans to distribute the new bins to residents who receive waste disposal services from the city this summer.
