City Council votes to secure funding to keep Lynchburg elementary schools open for next school year

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Lynchburg City Council stepped into action on Tuesday night. On May 14, the council voted to protect funding for Sandusky and T.C. Miller Elementary Schools in the upcoming 2024-25 school year.

The final vote was 5-2.

The two schools were originally slated to close after the school district experienced a shortfall of $3 million. However, with the help of parent advocates and concerns from the Hill City community, the council voted to protect the schools’ funding.

City officials say the vote was regarding a resolution that protects the funds by placing them in a “lockbox.” The resolution does not appropriate funds but is a safeguard for a portion of the money already allocated to a contingency for the city.

Vice Mayor Chris Faraldi says if needed, the money will be transferred to the school division at a later time with the understanding that it would be used for Sandusky and T.C. Miller Elementary Schools.
