City council to consider making Sacramento a sanctuary city for transgender people

(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento City Council will consider a resolution on Tuesday that would declare the city a sanctuary for transgender people.

Councilmember Katie Valenzuela is proposing the resolution, which would prohibit city resources and staff from being used to detain individuals who provide or seek gender-affirming care or assist someone in getting that care.

City documents related to the resolution state that it is being proposed “in preparation of future legislation” in other states that may criminalize this type of care and that may attempt to seek Sacramento’s help in enforcing rules from jurisdictions in those states.

Valenzuela wrote in the documents, in part, that, “given the Council’s stated values of equity and inclusion, it is important for the City of Sacramento to be proactive in reiterating our commitment to transgender rights and equal protections for transgender people by declaring ourselves a sanctuary city and a place of safety for transgender people.”

The documents also state that the city is already a sanctuary for immigrants and that this resolution would establish the same protections for transgender people.

The gender-affirming care cited in the resolution would include hormone therapy, surgery and mental health care.

Documents related to the resolution cite the passage of SB 107 in California, which prohibits law enforcement agencies from assisting in the arrest or extradition of people who come to California to receive gender-affirming care and are sought by out-of-state jurisdictions for doing so.

The documents also cite that at least 23 other states have laws that restrict or ban gender-affirming care for minors, and at least 7 states restrict or ban it for adults.

The city council meeting will be on Tuesday, March 26 at 5 p.m.
