City of Champaign looking for public input on housing plan

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Champaign is asking for the public’s input as it develops its annual action plan for the upcoming fiscal year.

The action plan is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and it outlines local affordable housing and community development needs. The city lays out which projects they expect to undertake and includes applications for federal grants from HUD.

The grants, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the HOME Investment Partnership (HOME), fund the majority of the affordable housing and neighborhood improvement programs provided by the City of Champaign.

For Fiscal Year 2024/2025, the city is recommending the allocation of an estimated $1.25 million in funds from the CDBG to go toward housing and community development programs. Officials want to collect the public’s input on this course of action.

The city will host public hearings for the plan on two dates — March 21 at the Neighborhood Services Advisory Board Meeting, and on March 26 at the Study Session meeting of the Champaign City Council. People can also fill out an online survey to provide their input.
