City of Brownwood involves community, unveils master plan for downtown improvements

BROWNWOOD, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The City of Brownwood held an open house forum to discuss its Downtown Master Plan refurbishments on Monday. The meeting promised community input by bringing sights at the request of the city’s residents.

Held at the Lyric Theater in Downtown Brownwood, the event provided opportunity for the public to view some initial drafts of the Downtown Master Plan. The City of Brownwood has been working with Freese and Nichols, Inc., an engineering and planning firm, to develop a plan that includes strategies, guiding principles, and action plans to help the city’s revitalization efforts.

One unique aspect about this project is that Freese and Nichols incorporated a large amount of community input and conducted a series of surveys over a 12-month period over what Brownwood residents wanted to see most. Some of those requests included streetscape improvements, more green spaces, pocket parks, a cultural arts district, and more engagement for kids and families in the downtown area.

Based on requests from the public, the master plan has included enhanced street scaping, an art park, underground electrical work, and a multipurpose courtyard dubbed the Silos Promenade that will be located close to the new events center for potential use as a VIP lounge overlooking concerts.

Brownwood’s Mayor Stephen Haynes told KTAB/KRBC improvements like these not only adds to the quality of life for his residents, but for businesses as well.

“To be able to have a more conducive environment for business – better parking, more amenities – I think it just helps us to continue to grow the existing businesses, but also recruit new ones,” said Mayor Haynes.

The latest version of the drafted plan will be presented by Freese and Nichols to the Brownwood City Council this April.
