Cigarette causes deadly mobile home fire in Lower Valley

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A cigarette setting a couch on fire, which quickly spread to the rest of a mobile home blocking exits, was the cause of a deadly fire early Saturday morning, April 20, in El Paso’s Lower Valley, El Paso Fire officials said.

The El Paso Fire Department responded to a Condition 1 fire in a mobile home at 7260 Alameda Ave, El Paso Fire officials said.

El Paso Fire officials confirmed two people were inside the mobile home at the time. One of them was seriously hurt while the other died at the scene.

KTSM spoke with the family of the victims who said two sisters, Maria Montes and Irene Roman, lived in the mobile home.

The family confirmed Roman died in the fire. Montes said she suffered severe burns and lung damage due to smoke inhalation.

Additionally, “No working smoke alarms were found within the premises, highlighting the critical importance of fire safety and use of early detection devices,” El Paso Fire officials said.
