Cicero to ban alcohol sales after midnight

CICERO, Ill. — The Town of Cicero passed an ordinance Tuesday that will ban the sale of all liquor after midnight.

The new law will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. The town currently has 110 establishments with liquor licenses that will be impacted by the ban.

President Larry Dominick cited violence, loud noises and disruptions to neighbors as the reason behind the ordinance change. The president said the establishments are not doing enough to prevent these problems from occurring, which are typically after midnight.

“We continue to have problems with several of the businesses that sell liquor including several bars and several restaurants and these problems have been placing a strain on our police department, siphoning resources away from addressing other safety issues,” said Dominick.

Previously, bars in Cicero could serve alcohol until 2 a.m. Under the new ordinance, the sale of all alcohol, open or packaged, is prohibited after midnight.

Dominick said he would organize a meeting to hear solutions to the problem from bar and restaurant owners.

Cicero, which is located west of Chicago, has some 84,000 residents according to the US Census.
