Christian Co. Sheriff’s squad car damaged in Scott’s Law crash

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The Christian County Sheriff’s Office is reminding people about Scott’s Law after one of their squad cars was damaged in a crash over the weekend.

Officials posted on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page that the crash happened early Sunday morning on Route 48 near Willeys. Two deputies were responding to an incident, with their emergency lights activated, when a car driving north on Route 48 approached them.

The car did not proceed with caution, officials said, and it hit one of the squad cars.

Scott’s Law is Illinois’ version of a Move Over law, which requires drivers to slow down and change lanes, if possible, when approaching any authorized emergency vehicle with its lights activated or any civilian vehicle with its hazard lights activated. Violations can result in a $250 to $10,000 fine for a first offense, a 90-day license suspension for a crash that results in property damage, or a 180-day to two-year suspension if the crash results in injury to another person.

In this case, the two deputies were not hurt. Officials said they were not around the squad car when it was hit.
