CHP to hold DUI checkpoint near Victorville on '4-20'

As cannabis connoisseurs gear up for the nation's unofficial "4-20" holiday on Saturday, the California Highway Patrol's Victorville Office is planning a sobriety checkpoint in the High Desert to help ensure those who take part don't get behind the wheel of a car afterward.

The checkpoint will be held from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday at an undisclosed location in the unincorporated county area near Victorville, according to CHP.

"The checkpoint will be staffed by uniformed officers from the CHP who are trained in detecting alcohol or drug-impaired drivers," the CHP said in a written statement.

Funding for the checkpoint is being provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

The Apple Valley Police Department also issued a warning not to drive while high, reminding the public that well recreational marijuana is legal for adults in California, driving under the influence of it is not.

“Whether it is on 4-20 or any other day, it is unsafe and illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana," Deputy Stephan Esparza of the Apple Valley PD said. "It’s important to make responsible choices, especially when it comes to getting behind the wheel."

Those who see an impaired driver on the road were urged to call 911.
