Chinese diplomat mocks Irkutsk airport, likens it to rural bus station
China's acting Consul General, Sun Chuanjiang, publicly disparaged Russians by comparing Irkutsk's airport to a rural Chinese bus station, videos of which circulated widely on local social media on April 12.
Speaking at a roundtable on April 12, Sun's comments underscored his skepticism regarding the airport's ability to attract more Chinese tourists without significant upgrades.
It looks like our bus stations," Sum said. "In a county! In a county!" He further illustrated his point by contrasting Irkutsk's infrastructure with the developments in his township, which boasts new subway lines connecting to the county and city centers.
These remarks, made during discussions on promoting tourism in Irkutsk, were not just passing observations but a pointed critique of Russian infrastructure development efforts—or the lack thereof.
The recent significant dam breach in Orsk, Orenburg Oblast, attributed by the construction company's director to "rodents," serves as further evidence of the state of Russia's infrastructure.
