Chillicothe city council votes on Chief of Staff and feeding wildlife

CHILLICOTHE — During this week's Chillicothe City Council meeting there were 13 items on the agenda, two of which, involving a chief of staff and feeding wildlife, have been hotly debated over the last few weeks.

The ordinance authorizing the Mayor's Office to fill the chief of staff position would appropriate $70,000 to fund the position through the end of the year. In recent weeks community members and council people have voiced their opinions with some saying the money could be used elsewhere, like police or fire, and others saying it is a needed position to help the city grow.

This ordinance failed with a vote of 4 to 3 with the votes being as follows:

  • Proehl- Yes

  • Henderson- Abstain

  • Creed- No

  • Bennett- No

  • Payne- Yes

  • Nickerson- Yes

  • Barnes- No

  • McKeever- No

The council also voted on an ordinance that would prohibit the feeding of wildlife on public grounds such as parks. The ordinance passed with a vote of 7 to 1. with Dustin Proehl being the only no vote.

Chillicothe City Council is held on the second and fourth Monday of every month. It can be watched in person at council chamber or online.
