Children hurt in school bus crash in Barton County

BARTON COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — The Barton County Sheriff’s Office says children were injured in a crash involving a school bus and a semi.

It happened shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday at NW 60 Road and NW 30 Avenue.

Sheriff Brian Bellendir tells KSN News that blowing dust led to near-zero visibility, causing the two vehicles to collide. The sheriff says it was a low-speed accident, but three children on the bus have “minor injuries.”

The Russel School District confirms that the crash involved the activity bus. It was carrying the high school’s baseball team to Liberal.

A mother of one of the baseball players has reached out to KSN since the publication of this article. She says that her son and his teammates walked away without any injuries “thanks to the bus driver who knew what he was doing and took every precaution that there was.”

The district sent out the following message to families:

Sheriff Bellendir says other vehicles were involved in the crash, which may have been a chain reaction accident. No other injuries have been reported.

The sheriff says the crash is still under investigation.
