Child says father gave mother gun before deadly shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– Police say a husband and wife were fighting over keys before the wife shot and killed her husband in their Frayser home late Tuesday night.

When officers arrived at the 3300 block of Ardmore, they said there were juveniles standing outside who told them their mother had shot their father. They found Terrance Bean dead on the kitchen floor and three spent shell casings nearby.

Investigators say a girl in the home witnessed the shooting and told police her father gave her mother a gun and told her to shoot him before her mother fired the weapon three times.

Elita Bean, 44, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder.

Elita Bean told police she and her husband were fighting over a gun when it went off. Her daughter, though, said her parents had been arguing over keys, and at one point, her mother grabbed a knife and tried to stab her father.

The juvenile said her mother asked her to get her gun, but her father got the gun, gave it to her mom, and told her to shoot him. Police said the victim was shot once in the chest and appeared to have stabbed twice.

Investigators said they recovered a large knife in a trash can in the garage and a 9mm handgun from a bedroom.

Investigators say when they tried to talk to Elita, she was too intoxicated to give a statement.

“It’s painful to hear that somebody being on drugs, or doped up or smoking or whatever and drinking, that’s what I feel like opens the door to crime, you know, people don’t think about having a gun, being drunk. You kill somebody,” said a neighbor.

Elita Bean was treated for cuts to her arm and fingers. She is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
