Child drives and crashes stolen vehicle into St. Jude Catholic Church pond

SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Police Department is currently investigating a motor vehicle theft and crash involving an underage driver.

Around 7:30 a.m. April 22, police responded to a motor vehicle theft alert in the River Park area. They were advised that a male, around 10 years old, had stolen a family member's SUV.

While responding to the call, the SBPD received several calls about the SUV driving recklessly on Ironwood Drive, with a reported hit-and-run on Ironwood Drive and Pleasant Street. As the vehicle traveled outside of South Bend limits, officers received a report that a mailbox had been hit on Fellows Street and Jackson Road in St. Joseph County, police stated in a press release.

An officer tried to stop the vehicle near Johnson Road and Fellows Street, but the driver drove the vehicle over the grass at St. Jude Catholic Church on Johnson Road and into a pond on the property.

The driver exited the vehicle on his own and was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The SBPD reports that no serious injuries were reported from this incident. The investigation remains open.
