Chesapeake deputy hurt in shooting receives Purple Heart

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Chesapeake deputy who received Deputy of the Year honors after being seriously hurt in a Hampton shooting last year has also received a Purple Heart.

The U.S. Marshals Service presented Investigator Scott Chambers the honor before a celebratory dinner in Washington, D.C. on March 22.

The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office says just before that ceremony, Chambers noticed a man slump from an apparent stroke or epileptic event. The certified EMT was able to jump in help the man, and relay to medics that the man lost consciousness and suffered a sudden drop in heart rate/blood pressure after mixing alcohol and multiple prescription drugs. The man would recover at the hospital.

Chambers was also named Deputy of the Year by the Virginia Sheriff’s Association after the January 11, 2023 incident in Hampton that left him in critical condition.
