Chemung County asks for public input on future plans

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — Chemung County is asking its residents for input on three plans that will shape the county’s future.

According to the Chemung County Executive’s Office, the county’s Planning Department is starting a year-long process to develop a new Comprehensive Plan, Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan, and Long-Range Transportation Plan. These plans will help determine long-term goals, investments, and activities for the county, and residents are encouraged to give their opinions on what Chemung County should focus on.

“Input from community members is critical to ensuring our plans reflect the needs and desires of those who live and work in Chemung County,” said Planning Commissioner Kevin Meindl. “We encourage everyone to share their ideas to help shape a vibrant, sustainable future for the County.”

The Comprehensive Plan is a broader plan that will focus on different aspects of what the county provides its residents while the Long-Range Transportation Plan and the Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan are more specific. The Comprehensive Plan will guide policies about land use, transportation, housing, economic development, agriculture, recreation, and more. The Long-Term Transportation Plan will focus on ways to strengthen Chemung County’s transportation system over the next 20 years, and the Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan will focus on supporting the local agricultural economy and preserving farmland.

Chemung County residents have a couple of different ways to share their thoughts on the county’s future. Residents can take a short or long survey using one of the links on Chemung County’s website or attend an in-person meeting. The first meeting will be held at the Ernie Davis Center, located at 350 E. 5th St. in Elmira, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. Attendees will learn more about the planning processes and current data, and they’ll be able to share input through small group discussions. More meetings will be announced in the future.

Community members can learn more about the plans by visiting this page of Chemung County’s website. Updates will be posted on the same webpage as well.
