LENEXA, Kan. — The Lenexa City Council accepted its 2024 Parks and Recreation Master Plan on Tuesday.

The plan was built from a year of research and community feedback and will now serve as the template for Lenexa’s park and recreation plans for the next 5–10 years, a news release said.

The 2024 master plan will consist of several new spaces and items that Lenexa Parks and Recreation hopes to invest in. The release says the master plan will include:

  • Improved walking and biking trails

  • Parks and preservation

  • An off-leash dog park

  • Increased outdoor recreation and nature programming

  • A splash pad or spray ground for young kids

  • Additional pickleball courts

  • Continued investment in the Lenexa Farmers Market

  • Additional adult fitness, wellness and enrichment programs

  • More art, history and culture programming

  • Continued investment in maintaining current parks

The Lenexa Parks and Recreation Department collaborated with Landworks Studio — a team of landscape architects and planners out of Olathe, Kansas — to develop the new master plan.

While being created, the City of Lenexa hosted many community-wide events and online forums to receive feedback from residents in the area.

According to the release, over 100 people gave their input during the department’s two open houses, and approximately 1,000 residents also took to social media to discuss the topic.

Lenexa’s last master plan was created in 2012 and kick-started the construction of the Lenexa Rec Center, Rolling Magic Skate Park, improved youth recreational fields and programs, the Lenexa Art Fair and the launch of the Lenexa Farmers Market.

“We have a good handle on trends and best practices in Parks & Recreation, but knowing what residents really want, what they think our community needs, that’s what’s most important,” said Lenexa Parks and Recreation Director Logan Wagler.

“The new Master Plan will guide our efforts, funding and where we put our resources for the next decade.”
