The Post Office has revealed the cheap long-haul holidays to book before the winter blues kick in. The new list compares the average cost of 10 travel staples, including a range of drinks, snacks and an evening meal for two, in 30 resorts and cities around the world. When it comes to the cheapest destination, Tokyo has knocked Cape Town off the top spot for 2019 to be named the best-value far-flung escape.
Low prices in the Japanese capital is an encouraging sign for Rugby World Cup fans planning to visit during this autumn's tournament. Although the weak pound has seen prices for the staple items rise from £57.40 to £60 in the last year, local prices have fallen in Tokyo. It's also 42 per cent cheaper than in 2013, making now the perfect time to visit Tokyo.
"Even though sterling is weaker than last year against every long-haul holiday currency, holidaymakers can still save themselves a lot of money and make a big difference to the overall cost of winter sun trips by doing their homework before booking to find out where meals, drinks and other staples are going to cost the least,” said Nick Boden, Head of Post Office Travel Money.
