CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s first quarter crime stats were released on Monday by CMPD and juvenile crime and property crime continue to be an issue that the department is focused on.

CMPD said they have launched several programs to try to tackle juvenile crime and recidivism. So far this year juveniles have been responsible for 21 shootings while 22 juveniles have been arrested for 80% of the city’s auto thefts.

Twenty-one cars on average are stolen per day in Charlotte, CMPD said.

CMPD highlighted that violent crimes are down 1% notably due to a decrease in aggravated assaults with a gun. The department said that despite that number being down, homicides are on the rise with 34 so far in 2024 compared to 26 this time last year.

CMPD highlighted its homicide division cracking cases with 70% of the cases so far in 2024 having been cleared. The national average is 50%.

Overall crime and property crime are slightly up year-over-year.

CMPD said it has increased its focus on uptown Charlotte with a new task force called Targeted Response for Intervention and Outreach (TRIO) and that crime incidents are down by 13% and 45 arrests have been made since its inception.

Meanwhile, applications for jobs and hiring are up and current vacancies have narrowed to 191. Fifty-eight recruits graduate this week and will join the force with another recruiting class graduating in December 2024.
