Charges dropped for other sister accused of abusing Dothan mother

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Prosecutors have dropped the charges against the other sister accused of abusing their elderly mother by physically stopping her from receiving medical treatment for an infection.

On March 15, Houston County prosecutors dropped elder abuse charges against Annie Newby, 44 of Dothan. She was set for trial in the case on Monday, March 18.

The sisters, Annie and Ida Newby, 45 of Dothan, were initially arrested in January 2020 after Dothan Police said they stopped their mother from receiving medical treatment, even physically pulling her wheelchair from an ambulance as medical workers were trying to take the elderly victim to a doctor’s appointment.

On March 6, prosecutors dropped the charges against Ida. Her trial was scheduled to start on March 11.

Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman tells WDHN that after talking with the Newby’s mother, the victim, they decided that there was not enough information to prosecute the case any further and dropped the charges against Ida and Annie.
