Changes move in for the weekend along cold front Saturday afternoon

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Saturday, Utah! We’ve had a fantastic warm welcome from spring this week, but we’re reminded that with spring comes spring showers.

Temperatures will still be above average today, but the steep downward trend begins as a cold front moves in this evening. Highs today will range from the mid 50s to the low 60s, and our warm spots like St. George will reach the upper 60s.

On Sunday we’ll be getting a case of temperature whiplash as highs dip as much as 15-20 degrees in a matter of 48 hours. Sunday’s high temperatures will only reach the low to mid 40s while our warm spots will be in the mid 50s — a stark contrast to the mid to upper 60s and low 70s we’ve grown accustomed to this week.

In addition to dropping temperatures, the front will bring soggy weather across the state over the weekend. St. George may escape the rain for today, but will likely see some tomorrow. Although temperatures do drop considerably behind the front, most valleys will not dip below freezing. This looks like a valley rain and mountain snow event, but there is a decent chance that valleys see brief periods of snow or a rain/snow mix.

By Sunday evening, our mountains could see 5-10 inches and some places could get up to a foot, while the Cottonwoods could get 8-16 inches. Mountain valleys won’t see too much snow, but a trace to 3 inches is expected, with up to 6 inches in ideal locations. Meanwhile, valley floors will see mostly rain, but up to 2 inches is possible, especially in the southwest valleys like Cedar City and Beaver.

We’ll see windy conditions ahead of the front today, but the western half of Utah will be hit hardest. A Wind Advisory goes into effect on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for Juab/Millard Counties and western Iron and Beaver Counties. Sustained winds of 25-35 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph are possible for areas in the advisory. This is enough to blow away unsecured objects, lower visibility with airborne dust, and cause some minor power outages.

Several more rounds of soggy weather are on deck and ready to bring precipitation to Utah through next week. The bottom line? Several rounds of moisture are headed our way bringing below-average temperatures and valley rain/mountain snow.
