Champaign middle school celebrates AVID revalidation

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Edison Middle School in Champaign celebrated their revalidation as a National AVID Demonstration School with a cupcake celebration on Tuesday. It is one of less than 300 schools in the country to hold the certification.

The program helps prepare students for their future by planning ahead and staying focused in school. It’s been in the district for at least 20 years. The school got a National Demonstration certification from AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, thanks to the hard work of both staff and students.

“It’s such a rigorous process,” said Angela Ward, Superintendent of Equity and Engagement. “So, this is a huge celebration because what Edison has done is they brought it back home. You don’t just keep it — you have to keep working for it. And Edison is saying to the community today: we’re doing it continually, and we’ll come back and do this again and again and again. That’s the promise.”

She said the certification is proof to Edison parents that their students have tools to achieve their dreams.
